Originally an illustrated book published in four editions and six languages, in recent years Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes has become a series of exhibitions of limited-edition C-type fine art photographic prints. A central premise of this ongoing project is that the visual legacy of five decades of robotic space exploration constitutes a significant chapter in the history of photography. For a partial listing of these shows (with photographs) see below. Beyond shows have been staged in locations ranging from the American Museum of Natural History in NY (2007-2008) to the spectacular Renaissance monastery at the Isola de San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice (Sept. 2009), and many other locations. These shows have now culminated in the current Beyond exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. Constituting an unprecedented tour of the Solar System, Beyond: Visions of Our Solar System contains all the planets, many of their moons, asteroids, and the Sun. It will be on view from May 2010 to May 2011. In addition the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibitions Service is currently conducting a four-year tour of a traveling Beyond exhibition in the United States. SITES venues have included the Worcester Art Museum in Massachussets (2009) and (from 4/17/10 to 8/29/10) the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
