Originally published in 2003, Michael Benson’s book Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes (Abrams) has since been published in six languages, with a paperback edition published in 2008 and a children’s edition in 2009.

The book, which has been called “An aesthetic revelation... a spectacular melding of science and art...” (LA Times) and “a pioneering and magnificent collection of pictures... sublimely exhilarating...” (Booklist), won First Prize for Design, Special Trade General Books Category at the 2004 New York Book Fair.

In April of 2007 Beyond became the basis of an exhibition of fine art photographic prints at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. A four-year exhibition of Beyond images is also currently being toured around the United States by SITES, the Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibitions Service, and a very large-scale 148-picture version titled Beyond: Visions of our Solar System is now on view at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
